About the courses

NLMS currently runs two annual courses. The Music Summer School, a week-long course for adult amateurs at Uppingham School, offers two orchestras, choir, brass ensemble, percussion ensemble and beginner string group. The String Quartet Weekend, held at Hinsley Hall in Leeds, is an opportunity for pre-formed quartets to be coached by the members of the Bingham Quartet.

The 2024 Music Summer School runs from Saturday 17th August until Friday 23rd. The 2025 Quartet Weekend will run from 12th to 14th September.

A challenging and enjoyable week of music-making in a very friendly atmosphere. A feature of the Music Summer School is the very high ratio of tutors to participants, with a professional tutor for each instrumental and vocal section.  All courses enjoy wide-ranging and exciting repertoire.

There will also be a range of open sessions run by members of the tutoring team, plus informal sessions which are member-led. Concerts take place on many of the evenings, given both by participants and professionals.

From 2024 we will be using the excellent facilities provided by Uppingham School in the county of Rutland.

We currently have vacancies for the 2024 Summer School as follows – if you would like to join us in Uppingham this year do apply as soon as you can as these spaces will be likely to be filled quite quickly!

We look forward to seeing you in August!

  • We are still accepting string applications for both Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonietta
  • For the brass ensemble and orchestral brass sections we have places available for 1 trombone and 1 tuba
  • In the choir we can still accept any voice, but are particularly keen for applications from tenors and basses.
  • We have a couple of places available in the percussion ensemble

Applications are now open for the next weekend from 12th to 14th September 2025.

The course, which accepts a maximum of 6 pre-formed ensembles, offers the opportunity to be coached by the highly-experienced members of the Bingham String Quartet, and has proved extremely popular since it began over ten years ago.

Participating groups get individual coaching sessions from all the members of the Bingham Quartet, plus an informal concert by the Quartet and an open masterclass and Q & A session. The weekend takes place in the superb surroundings of Hinsley Hall in Leeds.
